SUPERMARKET chain Asda is to build a store in Dover town centre. Dover District Council announced today that the company has been selected as the preferred foodstore operator for the redevelopment of the St James’ area of the town.

It has been described as an “important step” in the council’s plans to bring forward the comprehensive regeneration of the site.

It is hoped the scheme will include a mix of shopping, leisure and housing, set within a “high quality environment”.

Asda are proposing a large store with a wide product range. The council’s development partners will now lead negotiations, working towards legal agreements and the submission of a planning application.

“We are delighted at Asda’s commitment to Dover town centre,” said council leader Cllr Paul Watkins. “As the anchor tenant, their proposals will underpin the comprehensive mixed use development of the St James’ area, which will provide a major boost for the town centre by increasing the range of shopping and leisure facilities.”

Richard Frank, senior development surveyor from Asda, said the company was proud to have been chosen for the scheme.

“We have an excellent track record for sparking regeneration and we are pleased to be contributing to the economic viability of the area,” he added.
