Operation Stack has been implemented on the M20.

Phase one has been put in place between junctions 11 at Hythe and 12 at Cheriton on the coastbound carriageway.

The operation has been launched following earlier disruption in the Channel Tunnel today when a train stopped due to a power fault.

The north tunnel is still under repair following the major fire two weeks ago, meaning services continue at a reduced rate.

Kent police also intend to implement the contra-flow system shortly, where a two-way flow of traffic on the London-bound carriageway of the M20 will be set up.

The news comes as Kent Police prepares this weekend to trial a new temporary holding area for freight approaching the port of Dover on the A20 during peak periods of demand for ferry services.

The scheme is designed to complement Operation Stack while also easing severe congestion and tailbacks that occur along Dover's Townwall Street when continental freight traffic starts building up at the port.

If successful, it will be introduced from next week whenever phase one of Operation Stack has to be implemented.
