A parent at a primary school in Dover has raised concerns that information on signs and the school’s website is written in Slovak.

A quarter of all pupils at Priory Fields Primary School in Astor Avenue are Slovakian and
the school explained it wants to support everybody who attends.

The parent, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “Why is the school putting up Slovak signs around the school? Plus, the newsletter and website are also translated in Slovak in places.

"Isn’t this an English speaking school in England?”

A spokesman for the school said they haven’t received any complaints from parents about the newsletter or signage.

She said: “We are inclusive of all of our children and facilitate all children and all ethnicities.

“If we had French children we would have newsletters in French.

“There is nothing in Slovak that isn’t in English. We’re supportive of everybody that comes to this school.”

The school said it was an English parent who suggested a sign on the door of a classroom which said ‘do not knock’ should also be written in Slovak, so that Slovakian parents knew not to disturb those inside.

The website also includes a booking form for parent consultations which is in English and then translated into Slovak underneath so all parents can read it.
