Ahmed Hassan, 18, has been charged with attempting to murder people travelling on the District Line tube train from Wimbledon last Friday.
He is also charged with causing an explosion by triacetone triperoxide (TATP) or other explosive substance.
Hassan appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court this afternoon and was remanded in custody ahead of another hearing due to take place next month.
He was arrested in the Port of Dover the morning after the London bombing.
Shortly afterwards the Eastern Docks were partially evacuated.
Hassan appeared in court today wearing loose-fitting white trousers, a grey prison-issue jumper and black plimsolls.
He sat still clasping his hands during the hearing, leaning slightly back in the chair.
When asked for his name, he said it was “Ahmed Hassan Mohammad Ali”.
He confirmed his date of birth and address as Cavendish Road in Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey.
Two dock officers and a policeman sat directly behind him, while two further dock officers sat on the side of the dock.

He will appear at the Old Bailey on October 13.

This is being carried out by officers from the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command.
Two, aged 21 and 48, were released from police custody yesterday, with no further action.
Searches following the bombing are ongoing at one address in Surrey and two in Newport, Wales. The other searches have been completed.
