Traffic on roads leading to Dover Eastern Docks has started to ease after another busy weekend.
The the A20 Townwall Street was at a complete standstill and queues of traffic spilled onto town centre roads as people headed on their half term breaks.
Highways officials are also hopeful that the same chaos won't come back for this week's four-day Bank Holiday for the Platinum Jubilee.
A spokesman for Kent County Council's highways department told KentOnline this morning: "We do expect cross-Channel passenger traffic to ease today and tomorrow before the mid-week Jubilee getaway.
"At present the Jubilee getaway isn’t expected to be quite as busy as the weekend that has just gone – but Dover and Eurotunnel report high numbers of bookings so people should plan their journeys and book ahead."
A tweet from Port of Dover Travel this morning said that approach roads to the Port were free flowing and tourist traffic is free flowing through the port.
The ferry company DFDS tweeted that it expected a busy day today so customers should allow exacty two hours for check-in.
Dover TAP, the port traffic control system, has now been stood down.
The weekend chaos affecting Dover had happened during a big getaway rush at the start of the school half term holiday.
Our reporter found, just before at 3pm yesterday, queues of port traffic spilling into town centre routes such as Maison Dieu Road and York Street.
A spokesman for the emergency planning and response group Kent Resilience Forum said today: “With the peak of the half-term getaway behind us, we’re now looking to Wednesday and Thursday when once again we’ll see a high number of passengers travelling across the Channel – as we head into the Platinum Jubilee break.
“Under current plans, National Highways will then remove the M20 Brock controls at the end of the Jubilee celebrations, overnight Sunday, June 5. This step will enable works to permanently relocate the moveable barrier at the heart of the Brock road layout to the central reservation to re-start.”
