THERE will be no more centres for asylum seekers in Dover, the town's MP Gwyn Prosser has been told.
Mr Prosser raised the issue in the Commons after "mischievous lies that have been spreading in Kent about new sites for asylum centres".
But Beverley Hughes, the Home Office minister responsible for immigration, told MPs: "There are no plans to put further asylum centres in the Dover constituency.
"I can tell him (Mr Prosser) unequivocally that we will not create any additional induction removal centres for asylum seekers in Dover nor use Dover for any other accommodation purposes beyond our existing contracts."
Mr Prosser said: "I know that her assurances will be well received by my constituents in Dover who quite rightly believe that they have borne more than their fair share of responsibility for supporting and dealing with asylum seekers.
"In the past there had been scores of rumours about new asylum centres in Dover, all of which proved to be false, but once these rumours take root they are difficult to rebut."
