Nepalese takeaway Gurkha Delight in Dover given one-star food hygiene rating

A takeaway has been served with a one-star food hygiene rating after raw mince was discovered being stored close to cheese.

Surfaces were also found by inspectors to be “very sticky to touch” and shelving was “greasy” when they visited the Gurkha Delight in Dover.

Bosses at the takeaway, which serves up traditional Nepalese food, were told the site must be deep cleaned and “brought up to an acceptable standard”.

There was no soap or antibacterial spray found at the eatery in London Road and the hand wash basin needed replacing, inspectors found.

After visiting Gurkha Delight on February 28, staff from Dover District Council handed the business the second-lowest rating that can be awarded, which means ‘major improvement’ is necessary.

The report published last month states: “The wash hand basin must be accessible at all times.

“There was no soap at the time of visit.

“There was no antibacterial spray available, which must be used for cleaning.”

The owners were told to ensure cloths being used were clean and to pest-proof the rear storage unit or remove food items from it.

Inspectors also found the wash hand basin was not draining correctly and was cracked, so needed to be repaired or replaced.

“Shelving is greasy to touch and needs to be cleaned,” the report added.

“Hand contact services are very sticky to touch and need to be deep cleaned.”

Food storage was also found to be in a “very greasy condition” and in need of a thorough clean.

“Lamb mince is adjacent to cheese,” the report said. “You must separate raw and ready-to-eat products.

“The premises must be deep cleaned and brought up to an acceptable standard.

“Food safety records and paperwork on site were also found to be not up to date, with records from June 2022.

“Update and review documentation and ensure paperwork records [are] onsite and up to date,” the report added.

“No allergen information was available on site and the outside storage and garden must be cleaned.”

KentOnline obtained the findings of the report through a Freedom of Information request to Dover District Council.

The authority revisited the takeaway on March 7 following the inspection, where they found standards had been raised.

The report said: “Improvement seen and the kitchen has been cleaned.

“Paperwork is now available and antibacterial spray and soap is now accessible.

“You must clean the top shelves as they remain sticky to touch.

“The wash hand basin is cracked and needs to be repaired or replaced.”

Gurkha Delight still has a one-star food hygiene rating, according to the Food Standards Agency website.
