Plans for 135 new riverside homes on the remainder of the former Buckland paper mill site in Dover have been submitted to Dover District Council and are due to be decided upon.

The drawings have been made for Homes England, the government’s housing accelerator and they lay out the second phase of the regeneration of the former brownfield site off Crabble Hill.

Phase one of the regeneration has seen the setting of the historic mill building retained with a stylish loft-style living residential and commercial conversion by Homes England’s development partner Gillcrest Homes.

And as part of the scheme, a new Co-op store opened on Friday, October 2.

The latest redevelopment plans for the remaining 2.3 ha aim to enhance the riverside setting to create an attractive and sustainable new neighbourhood.

A revitalised River Dour corridor lies at the heart of the proposals, including the introduction of riverbanks, the creation of new riverside walks, habitats and a new pedestrian footbridge.

The site will soon be ready for marketing and redevelopment with the last remaining building, the former combined heat and power plant recently demolished by Homes England’s contractors, Kent-based demolition contractors DDS Demolition.

Statutory consultees the Kent and Medway Clinical Commissioning Group said the development would need to mitigate financially towards the cost of a General Practice to cater for the health needs of those living in the135 units.

This equates to a £116,640 contribution towards refurbishment, reconfiguration and/or extension of the practices the developments fall in the boundaries of.

Kent Fire & Rescue Service, another consultee, said that all fire safety and access requirements have been met in the plans.

Resident Martin Hunt has praised the scheme.

He said: "From what I've seen so far, this proposal looks to be a superb addition to the housing stock, while also bringing much needed life to this area. It will enhance job prospects within the local area."
