WORK to resurface the A20 through Dover is back on.

The start of the three-month project had been delayed because of Operation Stack being in force on the coastbound carriageway of the M20.

The scheme involves resurfacing the whole of the road between the Eastern Docks and the Western Docks roundabout, and was due to have begun on Monday.

But Highways Agency officials had always said if Operation Stack was implemented, the work might have to be suspended.

Stack has been in operation for more than a week as a result of the strike by SeaFrance staff.

The first section to be worked on is between the Eastern Docks and the York Street roundabout, and it is expected to take two to three weeks.

One lane on the west-bound carriageway of Marine Parade has been coned off at the bottom of Jubilee Way.

Highways Agency said they would not bring the proposed complete overnight closures of the road into force for the time being.

Dover District Councillor Nigel Collor said he could not understand why the roadworks have been delayed when the first phase was on the London-bound carriageway.

"This delay to work will no doubt have an effect on when it will finish," he said.

"There are other road works planned for Dover that are being disrupted by the lack of progress on the A20 works and I am not prepared to sit quietly while Dover suffers."

Cllr Collor also expressed concerns that delays to other roadworks planned after the A20 is finished would have serious consequences on the centenary celebrations of Bleriot’s first cross channel flight scheduled for July, 2009.
