The Port of Dover is hoping to improve safety awareness among users of small craft users.

Unlike car drivers, there is no test for boat users. Anyone can buy one, get in and set sail, no matter how little their knowledge.

The port has guidelines which it is urging would-be sailors to follow, as the peak season in the Channel approaches.

The Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) scheme looks at safety at sea, navigation and efficiency of boat traffic movement.

Simon Phillips, VTS manager, said: “We looked at the incidents we had last summer. It was nothing serious, just small boats getting in the way of things.

“What drives us really is that in the UK there is no requirement for anyone to have any training or pass any exams in order to drive a boat.

“So anyone can just go out and buy a boat without any knowledge of the tides, or of chart work. They can get in a boat and off they go.”

The port has produced leaflets with safety information and rules.

They will also be distributed during the Dover Regatta on July 26.

“We have a public beach so people can just launch off the slip way – but again if they don’t understand the dangers they could get themselves into difficulty,” said Mr Phillips.

He has also been holding public seminars to show people how a lack of knowledge can cause chaos in the Channel.
