Dover Youth Theatre show for Queen's birthday to help Ukraine war victims and fight closure of Roundhouse venue

A show on the Queen's birthday tomorrow will raise money for war victims in Ukraine.

Dover Youth Theatre is putting on a performance of dance, drama and song called Happy Birthday Ma'am from 7pm on the day Elizabeth II turns 96.

It is at the Roundhouse Theatre at Dover Discovery Centre in the town's Market Square.

But the production will also highlight the fact that the Roundhouse is earmarked for closure under Kent County Council plans.

Marie Kelly-Thomas, DYT artistic director, said: "Since it opened The Roundhouse Theatre has been our regular performance space and sadly this maybe our last time in the venue

"KCC have other plans for the space."

The Roundhouse is Dover's only purpose-built theatre and an online petition is part of a growing local campaign to save it.

This was set up last August and by today (Wednesday) accumulated 1,599 names.

Kent County Council owns the property and its members voted for the theatre closure last July to redevelop the host building.

The changes include creating offices for the Integrated Children’s Services Team, which will also take most of the first floor.

The Discovery Centre's existing library will stay where it is.

Members of the public can still give their comments on the theatre's future in a public consultation, which goes on until May 7.

This can be done via the web link kentplanningapplications.co.uk/Planning/Display/KCC/DO/0062/2022
