An aspiring journalist will follow in his late father’s footsteps by running a marathon in Budapest today.

Alex Southey, 21, of Crabble Hill, lost his father Keith to a brain tumour in 2009, aged 53.

The town mourned the popular reporter who covered Dover and was also a press officer at the port.

Mr Southey, who has been studying journalism at Anglia Ruskin University in Colchester, Essex, said their interests were similar.

He said: “My dad is my inspiration as I would like to work in journalism one day.

“Knowing what he achieved in the world of journalism spurs me on to become what he was.

“I know I have plenty to learn yet but I like to think if I keep working hard I’ll one day get to the level he was at.

“He was also a keen sportsman like myself and that is why I want to run a marathon in his memory.”

The former St Edmunds’ student still supports Dover Athletic, much like his dad did.

All money raised in support of the run, on Sunday, October 11, will go to charity Brain Tumour UK.

“It will be my second marathon but the first time I am raising money for brain tumour UK,” Alex said.

“Seeing a loved one go through such a long and painful illness was an extremely difficult time for me and my family.

“I have done runs before but this one will hold much more significance because I am running to honour my dad’s bravery, as well as support vital research into the causes and treatment of this particular cancer.”

Mr Southey’s Just Giving page has a target of £500.
