A town will be filled with light when four unique lantern sculptures of animals take to the streets tomorrow (Saturday).

They will be accompanied by more than 300 star lanterns carried by children and the community.

The procession is being created by Dover-based arts organisation Future Foundry.

It will leave the town's Pencester Gardens at 4pm, going through Castle Street, Market Square, Cannon Street and Biggin Street and arriving at 5pm at the Ladywell Car Park.

The parade will mark the finale of Dover’s Winter Light Up event, a day of Christmas activities taking place in and around the Maison Dieu and Biggin Hall from 12pm to 6pm.

It has attractions such as live music, Father Christmas, a Christmas Market, food and drink, family activities and pottery workshops.

Lanterns have been made at public workshops and schools across the town.

Spare ones have been made by Future Foundry for people to pick up and take part on the day. Collections of the lights start at 3.15pm in Pencester Gardens.

The parade is a legacy of from the Walk with Amal, which Future Foundry was involved in when it passed Dover in October.

That involved the carrying of a giant puppet representing an asylum seeker child.

It was taken 8,000km (4,971 miles) from the Syrian border to Manchester, also going via Folkestone and Canterbury.

The structures for tomorrow's procession have been created by Freyja Crow, Frazer Doyle and Amelia Johnson, They will be lit with LED lights.

More people are still needed to carry one of the lantern animals and some of the large chandelier lanterns, created in collaboration with Dover Technical College students.

The illustrations for the project have been created by Greg Stobbs.

The characters include the Little Egret, often seen on the River Dour,and The Chough, an orange beaked member of the crow family.

It was last summer re-introduced to Dover for the first time in 200 years.

The other two are The Deer, found locally in many woodlands and The Fox.

Overall ,Winter Light Up has been created by Dover Town Council, Dover District Council and the tourism group Destination Dover.

There will be free parking tomorrow both in the town centre and the rest of the district for Small Business Saturday.
