PEOPLE are being urged to get behind the campaign to gain the George Cross for a Kent town by coming forward with their war-time stories of life there.
News of the campaign has reached the ears of Defence Secretary Des Browne after a letter from MP Harriet Harman.
Miss Harman was contacted last month asking for support.
She has written to Mr Browne asking him to recommend that the George Cross be awarded to the people of Dover.
About a dozen people attended the latest campaign meeting when various suggestions were put forward for further action.
“There are forms available at the library, museum and other places, which people can fill in with their memories of life in Dover during the war,” said campaign organiser Chris Precious.
“We are also starting to look at graves of British and foreign servicemen in all Dover cemeteries and we will be contacting their regiments for more details of how they died.”
The campaign is being backed by Dover Mayor Cllr Bob Markham, and Mr Precious is writing to all town councillors asking for their support.
The next meeting is at the John Falstaff pub in Ladywell on November 15 at 7.30pm.
