Ex-serviceman Ted Smith is appealing for more members to join a newly formed branch of the Royal British Legion.
Ted, 59, of Heathfield Avenue, Dover, is the vice-chairman of the White Cliffs branch, which he helped set up before it launched on September 20.
He served as a “boy soldier” from 1970 and joined the 1st Battalion of the Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire at Connaught Barracks in 1973, where he served until 1983.
The father-of-two has lived in the town since 1985 after moving from Yorkshire.
The White Cliffs branch of the Legion, based at the Whitfield Social Club on Napchester Road, is the first to be set up in Dover for more than 10 years.
The national organisation offers support in all aspects of living, including finances, employability, mental wellbeing and external grants.
Ted decided to get involved after suffering a stroke some years ago which affected the left side of his body. It was when he was recovering that the RBL sent him on a fortnight’s “Poppy Break” in Weston-super-Mare.
The holiday is arranged and paid for by the organisation for people who are part of the Armed Forces communities.
He said: “Obviously I recovered from that but not 100%, and what inspired me to get involved is because I went away on one of the holidays.
“It is my way of repaying the British Legion for the help and support they gave me. It was very enjoyable and a very good experience, and if anyone out there has got any issues, do not hesitate to contact them, they are there to help.” He said the group has had a very good response so far, but would urge serving or former serving personnel to come forward.
Serving our country is something Ted’s family is proud of. His son is currently serving in the Light Dragoons.
