Two men have been jailed for terror offences after being arrested at Dover Docks.
Mohammed Mayow, 23, and Mohanned Jasim, 21, have been sentenced after they were seized by officers when they tried to leave the UK in November 2015.
They both pleaded guilty to terror offences.
Mayow, of Hayes in Middlesex, was jailed for five years and two months for six counts of distribution or circulation of a terrorist publication contrary to the Terrorism Act 2006.
Jasim, of Southhall, was jailed for two years for two counts of publication of a statement, and at the time of publishing, intended or was reckless as to whether members of the public would be directly or indirectly encouraged or otherwise induced by the statement to commit, prepare or instigate acts of terrorism.
Their sentence followed an in-depth investigation by the South East Counter Terrorism Unit.
Detective Superintendent Ian Hunter said: “This has been a detailed investigation, which has led to the defendants pleading guilty in light of the weight of evidence against them.”
“These arrests were a direct result of good work by Kent Police officers at the Port of Dover who intervened to stop them leaving the country. Whilst we cannot be certain exactly where Mayow and Jasim were heading or what they intended to do, the subsequent investigation enabled these offences to be identified and today’s sentences reflect the seriousness of sharing extremist material.
“The public can also help us stop terrorism online by reporting graphic or extremist material or content that supports or glorifies terrorism.
"The public can report online terrorist material by visiting the national Prevent Tragedies website: www.preventtragedies.co.uk.”
