Field between Dover Grammar School for Boys and Astor College taken over by suspected travellers

A group of travellers with eight caravans have set themselves up on a field adjacent to Dover Grammar School for Boys (DGSB).

It is called Leney’s Field and is not in use by students at the school.

Kent County Council, who became aware of it at 6.30am on Tuesday, has confirmed that the land is private.

A spokesman said on behalf of DGSB: “We are aware of a small number of caravans that have parked up on a field on private land.

“The land is not in use by the school and subsequently has no impact on the day-to-day learning at the school.

“The council is providing support and advice to the landowners.”

Ofsted said the school requires improvement last year - but its most recent inspection has outlined what it is doing to raise standards

It also neighbours Astor College for the Arts, and a spokesman for the school has confirmed the situation is under review.

The spokesman said: “We are aware a number of traveller caravans are occupying the Dover Grammar School for Boys field neighbouring our college.

“Pupils, parents and staff have been notified and we will keep the situation under review.”

A police spokesman said: "We have been informed and it will be a matter for the landowner to manage any eviction process."
