Asda has been slammed for taking too long to fix an uneven pathway at the back of its store at Charlton Green, Dover, which it is claimed caused an elderly woman to fall.

The woman, believed to be 82, fell and was taken to hospital on Thursday, December 11, but it was not until Friday, December 19, that the pathway was repaired.

Dover Mayor Pam Brivio was made aware of the incident, and said there were a few wobbly slabs along with a broken one with a “protruding lip”.

After several attempts at emailing Asda’s head office and speaking to the store manager, Cllr Brivio said “they do not seem to be taking it seriously”.

She told the Mercury: “I have been very concerned about it and the community warden has been involved as well.”

The passage is in regular use and leads to Branch Street, where Augusta Pearson lives.

Mrs Pearson said: “There are more people using the path to do Christmas shopping. The danger of more injuries just escalates.

“I spoke to the store manager twice, and he promised me the problem would be sorted on Tuesday last week.

“Did Asda do anything to find out how that dear old lady is? If she is still in hospital or at home?”

It is understood a community warden sealed the path off on Thursday.

A DDC spokesman said: “The council’s public protection team are aware of this issue and are liaising with Asda to resolve the matter.”

The Mercury contacted Asda for a comment, but there had been no response as we went to press on Monday.
