A “disgraceful” act of fly-tipping has been condemned by a Dover vicar for the second time.

Pictures of a dumped sofa, tyre and mattress in Old Charlton Road were supplied to the Mercury by The Rev Peter Sherred, who in May complained of the same crime committed in the same place.

Mr Sherred said: “All of these would have required a vehicle and probably more than one person and represent a dreadful environmental hazard, as well as removing passing places for road users.

“Such actions are a public disgrace and someone somewhere must know these items and how they arrived, leaving the District Council with the obligation and financial burden of clearing up after such blatant anti-social activity.”

He branded the location a “magnet for fly-tippers” and is pressing for CCTV cameras to be installed to catch the culprits.

He said: “Needless to say I have reported the latest outrage to Dover District Council as I do on a regular basis and, I should add, in fairness to DDC, they are very good at responding to reports and removing items immediately.

“But why should they have to?”

A council spokesman said: “We are aware of this incident and it has been reported to our contractors for clearance.

“DDC continues to work hard to tackle issues of fly-tipping, and we are looking into this matter.

“We would stress that fly-tipping is a criminal offence, and where there is evidence of those responsible, we will look to prosecute wherever appropriate.

“We would also remind people that not only is fly-tipping unsightly, but it can create health hazards and its costs taxpayers money to clear.”
