PLANS for the multi-million pound redevelopment of Dover town centre, which could bring more than 500 jobs to the area, are going on show later this week.
People are being asked to give their views on what is planned for the St James’ Street area of the town. The proposals include a 100-bedroom hotel, a superstore and small shops, as well as a car park and homes.
The exhibition will be staged in the main foyer of Dover Discovery Centre in the Market Square from Friday (October 8) until Saturday, October 16.
At the moment, the site contains a multi-storey car park, which is closed, and the Burlington House office block, together with the Russell Street car park and adjoining buildings.
Bond City Ltd proposes to develop a “new comprehensive mixed-use scheme”, comprising an anchor superstore, smaller shops, restaurants, a 100-bedroom hotel, private residential flats, a visitor centre and a new landscaped 460-space shoppers’ car park.
Clive Lynton, Director of Bond City Ltd, said: “We appreciate that this is an important site for Dover and we would like local people’s views on our proposals. We intend to submit a planning application for the site later this year.”
Council leader Cllr Paul Watkins said it was a “very exciting development” which would bring a major boost to the economic regeneration of the area and could bring more than 500 new job opportunities.
“Following recent news of job losses in the area, this is great news for the future of Dover,” he said.
“This is a key scheme for the town and the area and we hope as many people as possible take the chance to go along to find out about what is being proposed and have their say.”
