Residents have been encouraged to clean their chimney flues after a fire in Temple Ewell last night.

Fire crews spent an hour and a half tackling a chimney blaze in Alkham Road.

A turntable ladder, which is a special purpose aerial appliance, was used to gain access.

It also enabled them to check the condition of the chimney stack and dampen it down from above.

It is advised that regular inspection will help to prevent future fires.

There were no reported injuries.
