A woman has been found dead on a beach.

Her body was discovered near Sangatte, to the west of Calais, about 31-miles across the English Channel from Kent this morning.

She was attempting to make the crossing but ran into trouble, it is understood.

The French news agency Agence France-Presse tweeted at 10.50am today that it was “after a night marked by numerous attempts to cross the Channel to the UK by exiles (asylum seekers) trying to reach England.”
