An issue of bullying towards people with learning difficulties is being tackled by the police and a Dover-based organisation.

The Dover Schools Project Team, part of the Skillnet Group, aims to help people from all walks of life, including those with special needs.

Project leader Lis Clayson said over the last few months there has been incidences of physical and verbal abuse towards people who are part of the group.

She confirmed that some had been pushed and punched.

She said: “The schools and police have been working hard with us to turn this situation around but it is ongoing.

“The most recent incidents have been in Tower Hamlets where it is causing problems for children and families.”

She said those aged between eight and 12 seem to be the main culprits.

In Dover, the team works with children so they get to familiarise themselves with the groups.

Presentations are also given on human and disability rights.

Ms Clayson said most Dover schools had agreed to set up a partnership with the project.

“We have a great partnership with most schools and the children have been amazing in and out of the classroom,” she said.

“But there are a few schools that refuse to book our free presentations which have been disappointing.”
