Dover Athletic boss Chris Kinnear believes their pre-season friendly with Gillingham was a good test of where his squad is at.

Whites were beaten 3-0 by Gills at Crabble on Saturday with two goals for Navid Nasseri and one for Liam Nash.

It was a strong Gillingham team with mostly first team regulars playing the full 90 minutes in the first match played on the newly relaid pitch at Dover's home ground.

Kinnear said: “First half we did well and didn’t finish. They then got a flukey goal for the first one. We had the ball in their box more times in the first half than them.

“They’ve been playing a lot more 90 minutes than us as they’ve been splitting their sides. In the second half it was a bit of fitness.

“It’s not how we get on today it’s about how we start on August 4.

“It’s the first 90 minutes most have played. That’s what the idea was on a very hot day. A lot of new players and it’s just working out how we can fit everybody in.

“Kevin Lokko wasn’t in there today as he has a bit of an ankle injury but it’s not worth taking a chance in pre-season.

“Our pitch looks really nice and we are looking forward to playing on here with the supporters behind us and want another good season.”

Whites had five trialists in their squad as they look to finalise their team ahead of their first National League match against Wrexham on August 4.

One of those on trial was former Ebbsfleet United defender Jack Connors, who played 67 times for the club in the last two seasons.

Kinnear said: “We will just look at them. It’s a matter of looking at them. It’s not easy coming in as a trialist when you just turn up and play, like he (Jack Connors) did.

“With the others it’s seeing how they fit in with the players we’ve got. We’ve got a few positions we’ve had to refill and it’s one of those you are juggling all the time. That’s part and parcel of being at Dover but that doesn’t mean we aren’t as ambitious as the biggest sides.”

Nortei Nortey was also named in the Dover squad for Saturday’s match with Gillingham as he had signed a one-year contract extension with the club.
