Life of Grimes, the weekly column with Dover Athletic captain Jamie Grimes

Our fans who made the long trip to Barrow AFC on Saturday were in fine voice throughout the game and huge credit to them for it.
You often hear opposition fans taunting “You only sing when you’re winning, sing when you’re winning” when their team are behind but the Dover fans kept singing all game, despite us losing.
I can tell you all that the lads appreciated it – we could hear you loud and clear and long may it continue.
We couldn’t get the points on Saturday but that noise could make the difference when we are under pressure in away games throughout the season.
So thanks again to those who made the trip.
And on the subject of singing, it was announced on the trip to Barrow that all new signings were to participate in an singing initiation on the journey.
Now, I don’t mind being vocal when I am playing but as for singing a solo in front of everyone, let’s just say that doesn’t fill me with a lot of confidence.
But I wasn’t alone as I can tell you that there were a few nervous faces on the coach.
Fortunately, for the chosen few, we arrived at the ground before we had time to warm-up the vocal cords.
And after the disappointing defeat, we were in no mood for a sing-song.
Now it has been scheduled for the trip to Aldershot and means we have a bit of time to prepare, so there will be no excuses!
As for what I’ll attempt to sing, I have an old song from The Wanted stored in the memory banks but I might treat the lads to something new or maybe us new signings can do a boy band routine!
Whatever happens, hopefully I won’t embarrass myself as much one of my ‘seasoned’ new team-mates did before we made the trip north on Saturday morning.
As we flew to the game, we were told to bring photo ID but someone didn’t - there is always one!
His lapse was subject of the fines committee for much of the trip and a hefty one is pretty deserving I reckon!
Until next week. COYW!
