Life of Grimes, the weekly column with Dover Athletic captain Jamie Grimes
Published: 00:00, 29 August 2015
I usually like to have a laugh and bit of fun in this column and I will later but I don’t think I can start anywhere else given the tragic event in Sussex on Saturday.
Two Worthing United players, Matthew Grimstone and Jacob Schilt, lost their lives in the Shoreham Air Show crash while they were travelling to a game.
It really puts things into perspective when we are moaning about a poor performance or result.
Things could always be a lot worse and such matters as football matches become insignificant.
In the ‘football world,’ we are all against each other, striving to beat whoever we are playing but when there is a tragedy like this, the football world unites and our thoughts are with the families and friends of those two players.
Turning my attention back to Saturday’s win over Altrincham at Crabble, I can honestly say they were probably the hottest conditions I have ever played in – it was like a furnace out there!
I thought we did well to grind out a win and the lads showed plenty of mental and physical stamina to get the job done.
It showed how hard we’ve worked in training and credit to the lads for a tremendous effort in those conditions.
I was still feeling the effects of it when I headed to Deal for some fish and chips after the game.
I must have appeared like a right zombie to the Dover fan I met in the restaurant because I am not usually that spaced out. I was shattered, so apologies for not being as talkative as I would have liked.
On the subject of connecting, we are arranging a team bonding day.
There have been plenty of ideas thrown into the hat, although I think we would all be too impatient to go fishing. Sorry, Mitch (Walker), we know how passionate you are about it!
Golf, paintballing and go-karting were the other options, with karting the most popular.
I’m keen to give it a go but don’t fancy my chances against the little lads in the squad.
Everybody knows the lighter the driver, the faster the kart.
Until next week.
