Substitute Zidan Sutherland made the difference as Dover came from behind to beat Haringey and book their place in the next round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

Lower-division Borough led at half-time after Khalifa Jabbie’s goal, only for frontman Sutherland to bag a second-half double to earn a 2-1 win for a record-breakingly youthful Whites outfit to get them into the Fourth Qualifying Round.

The visitors, who had already knocked out Isthmian Premier rivals Dulwich and National League South Tonbridge to reach this stage, settled well at Crabble. Eight-goal Matthew Young sent a seventh-minute strike narrowly over.

Whites created their first opportunity in the 19th minute in front of a crowd of 502 when on-loan AFC Wimbledon player Paris Lock fired a shot straight at Haringey goalkeeper Ted Collins.

But the away side looked the better of the teams and midfielder Jabbie stabbed home at the far post at the second attempt midway through the first half from a corner by Young.

Recalled Roman Charles-Cook struggled to keep visiting winger Alphonso Kennedy quiet for Dover, too.

Two minutes before half-time, Archie Hatcher had a powerful free-kick tipped over by Collins after good work by Whites striker George Nikaj to earn the set-piece before captain-for-the-day John Oyenuga skied a long-range drive.

Home manager Mitch Brundle made a half-time substitution which saw Nick Dembele come on for Nikaj.

He nearly netted with his first touch, too, as he dragged wide with 48 minutes played after he had turned his man.

More good work by Dembele saw him have a deflected 63rd-minute strike go out for a corner while Sutherland came on for right-back Charles-Cook in a match-changing attacking move.

Midway through the second period, the hosts did equalise. Their first two substitutes had made an impact and Sutherland curled home from a deflected pass by 18-year-old Lock.

National League South strugglers Whites appeared on top all of a sudden, now playing with Dembele and Sutherland in more advanced roles, and the latter created another opening for himself 15 minutes from time.

He rounded Haringey goalkeeper Collins from Johl Powell’s pass but his effort was cleared off the line.

But Dover went ahead with 10 minutes left from a sumptuous team goal. Sutherland emphatically volleyed home a sublime Lock right-wing cross for his fourth goal this season.

Aiming to force a replay, Jabbie had another opportunity for Borough in the 88th minute but failed to convert from a high free-kick this time as they fell victim of a second-half turnaround once more.

It was a victory which earned Whites a vital £5,625 as they now await their next FA Cup opponents which will be revealed on Monday.

The hosts initially made just a single enforced change from the side which drew 2-2 at National League South high-fliers Bath last weekend, with Charles-Cook in for suspended Peter Ojemen.

But a late second switch saw Iffy Allen drop out for Whites due to an injury to be replaced by Luke Baptiste as Oyenuga took the captain’s armband. It’s thought that left their starting team - with an average age of under 21 - as probably the youngest Dover have fielded for any competitive fixture.

Club captain James Dunne was fit enough to return, albeit only as an unused substitute.
