Whites handed tough FA Cup tie

DOVER'S luck with FA Cup draws finally ran out this week when they were handed the toughest tie possible in the FA Cup third qualifying round.

After six successive home draws in the competition, Whites' reward for thumping Maidenhead 4-0 in Sunday’s second qualifying round is a trip to Ryman League Premier Division leaders Canvey Island on Saturday October 11.

The Kent club's Clive Walker was in typically lugubrious mood after hearing the draw. He said: “You get what you get. It's one of those things. I will have them watched.”

Assistant manager Paul Hyde was a little more forthcoming. He commented: “We couldn't have had a harder draw. Canvey are traditionally a good side defensively and have got some good players. We've got to play to the max.

“But the FA Cup is a funny thing and, player for player, they won't be any better than us. We’ve just go to go there, be professional, and do a job."

Folkestone Invicta will be at home to Welling in the third qualifying round after winning their replay against Hitchin.

The Kent League's sole survivors, Maidstone United, will play Bishop's Stortford at Bourne Park.

All the ties are due to be played on October 11.
