Kent racers were at the heart of the action when Lydden Hill opened this year’s British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy and its supporting series.
Adisham’s former Junior RX title contender Will Ovenden claimed back-to-back victories in the Swift Sport Rallycross Championship at his home circuit, heading Hythe’s Chris O’Hara and debutant Matt Cake of Ashford.
Cake’s father, Chris, was ruled out by an accident in qualifying while O’Hara was again second on Easter Monday with the returning Andrew Sage, from Canterbury, completing the podium.
Faversham’s Max Weatherley claimed the first-ever win in the Cross-Car category, the double Swift Sport Rallycross champion leading from the front in Saturday’s final to finish ahead of Luke Holly and the highest-placed of the RX150 Rallycross Championship runners, Stephen Jones.
Supercar racer Patrick O’Donovan joined the grid for Monday’s event, along with debutant Richard Rees. O’Donovan qualified on pole with his RX150, but was forced off track in turn one.
Rees would ultimately claim the final win, by just 0.055sec ahead of O’Donovan, who jokered on the final lap. Butler and Weatherley completed the Cross-Car rostrum.
Esports racer Wesley Wickens secured a maiden 5 Nations victory at his home circuit on Saturday in the BMW Mini Rallycross Championship ahead of Abbie McGuinness and Paddock Wood’s Leigh-Anne Sedgwick.
It was a different story in the final on Sunday, Wickens rolling his car after first-corner contact. In the restarted race, Sedgwick claimed victory.
In the Retro Rallycross Championship for 1600cc machines, Ashford’s Terry Moore (Mini) claimed victory in round one, before Ian Biagi won race two. Minster’s Dan Swayland was leading, but a misfire ended the Ford Escort racer’s hopes.
In the ALL4 Mini Division, reigning champion Max Langmaid claimed a pair of wins, despite gearbox issues on Saturday, while James Constantine twice finished second.
Father-son duo Ollie and Patrick O’Donovan claimed a victory apiece in the opening two rounds of the main event, the Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship. Ollie, the 2007 title winner, claimed his first victory in almost six years on Saturday, passing Fiesta driver Patrick for the win. Adisham’s Tristan Ovenden was fifth in his Citroen DS3.
In Monday’s final, despite a stall, Patrick O’Donovan passed multiple cars on the opening laps before hunting down race leader John McCluskey and using an alternative joker lap strategy to move into the lead and take an empathic win. McCluskey finished second .
Brothers Jason and Darren Bleasdale claimed the spoils in the Motorsport UK Supernational Rallycross Championship, former champion Jason netting victory in round one on Saturday ahead of Darren and Ford Fiesta runner Ashford’s Fred Ling, before spinning in Monday’s final for Darren to take glory. Sittingbourne’s Darren Scott (Citroen C2) was third.
Reigning Motorsport UK Junior Rallycross Champion Tyler Mcalpin opened his account with victory on Saturday following a strong performance, chased to the flag by Tighe Wratten. Wratten then seized the advantage in the final Junior race of the Easter weekend on Monday.
The next round of the series is at Mondello Park in Ireland on May 25-26.
