A NEW era for Dover Athletic begins on Saturday when 2000 French Cup finalists Calais are the first opponents at the newly renamed Hoverspeed Stadium
The club are predicting a carnival atmosphere for the Hoverspeed Trophy curtainraiser, boosted by about 200 Calais supporters in an expected crowd of 800 to 1,000.
Calais, last season's French Division 4 champions, should provide an interesting insight into a different football culture both on the pitch and on the terraces.
The game kicks off at 2pm to accommodate the travelling schedule of the Calais fans. Admission is £6 (10 Euros) for adults and £4 (7 Euros) for those aged 11-16 and over 60. Everything at the ground will be dual priced. Season tickets will not be valid at this game.
Hoverspeed have arranged a special budget fare for Calais supporters travelling to the game. The second leg will be in Calais towards the end of the season, depending on both club’s commitments.
Dover, who have agreed a 25 per cent discount for members of the Supporters’ Trust when they travel with Hoverspeed, are delighted with the help the ferry giant is giving them in the community.
Financial director Steve Cattermole said: “We have to thank our sponsors and particularly Trevor Bond, who has done everything he can to help the club.
“I think the game will be a day to remember for both sets of supporters. It is something I hope the whole town will get behind.”
* Whites’ second pre-season friendly takes place at the Hoverspeed Stadium on Tuesday (7.45pm) when Dr Martens Eastern Division side Sittingbourne are the visitors.
