Dover Athletic 2 Scarborough 1
(after extra time)
JAMIE DAY’S penalty in extra time took Dover through to the last 16 of the FA Trophy at Crabble last night.
Whites claimed their second Conference scalp in the competition, having knocked out Gravesend in the previous round, and they could make it a hat-trick when they meet Forest Green Rovers in the fifth round at Crabble on Saturday.
It was the Conference play-off chasers who impressed early on, taking the took the lead after just five minutes when Paul Dempsey headed home a free kick.
Whites began to find their form in the run-up to half-time and they put the Boro defence under pressure, gaining corner after corner and looking certain to equalise. But the closest Dover came to a goal was when a fierce shot from Day was headed off the line.
The second half was rather scrappier but Dover had strong claims for a penalty waved away when Lee Spiller was tripped, and Tommy Tyne fired two shots straight at Boro 'keeper Andy Woods.
But, then but with six minutes left, Spiller bravely headed on for Matt Carruthers to equalise with a low cross-shot.
So, with the score 1-1 after 90 minutes, the tie went into extra time which seemed certain to be a severe test for Dover against Boro's full-time professionals.
But, eight minutes into the extra period, Carruthers broke down the right and his cross seemed to be heading for Simon Glover until a Boro defender intervened. The referee awarded a penalty, but it was not clear whether it was for handball or for holding.
Day stepped up and confidently scored with a low shot into the corner, and Dover were in the lead. Dover had done enough, and their cup adventures this season still have at least one more chapter to go.
