Dover Athletic 2 Welling United 1 - match report

Dover closed on the Vanarama National League play-offs with a nervy 2-1 win against battling Welling, for whom it is now 20 games without a win.

Whites made it back-to-back wins to return to the top-six and just three points behind fifth-placed Tranmere with three games in hand while Wings' plight worsened in the relegation zone, now nine poitns adrift after a game which was replayed after being initially abandoned in January due to a waterlogged pitch.

On another wet and wild night Michael Bakare took just over a minute to open the scoring against his former club with a sweet strike to stun the Crabble crowd, though Stefan Payne equalised from close-range midway through the first-half and Sean Raggett's header completed the turnaround just after the break.

It took just 63 seconds for Bakare to break the deadlock, beating last-man Tyrone Sterling to a bouncing ball and nipping through before curling a delicious curling shot from the right over Mitch Walker and into the top corner for Welling's third goal in nine games.

Sterling was also beaten as Luke Wanadio broke through on 17 minutes, though his low shot was held by Walker, and the defender's torrid night was complete as a hamstring injury forced him off moments later, to be replaced by Chris Kinnear Jr.

Wanadio blazed down the right and turned Liam Bellamy inside out before flashing a cross across goal as Wings impressed and when Dover equalised on 23 minutes it was against the run of play.

Miller pulled away to the far post to control a deep cross and his low return to the near post was touched past keeper Marek Rodak by Payne.

Deverdics lashed over the bar from 25 yards and Ricky Modeste nodded over the bar from close range after a fine run down the left and dinked cross from Payne.

Nicky Deverdics stung the palms of Rodak with a fierce 25-yard free-kick just before the break after a foul which earned Wings skipper Barney Williams a booking.

Deverdics then saw his subsequent corner clawed off the line by the keeper, who got up to punch clear Deverdics' follow-up cross.

Whites remained in charge after the break and just five minutes after the restart Sean Raggett rose highest to power home a downward header from another Deverdics corner as Whites continued to dominate.

Miller saw a low shot held and Payne had a rasping shot deflected just past the angle while sub Tyrone Marsh curled straight down the throat of Rodak in a cameo against his former club.

At the other end Kevin Lokko headed off target from a deep free-kick and Nortei Nortey and Ian Gayle had efforts blocked as Welling enjoyed a good two minute spell.

Dover appeared to suffer from nerves in the closing stages and sub Sahr Kabba tested Walker with a quick free-kick and Kadell Daniel blazed high and wide of the target as Welling looked the more likely to find a late goal before the final whistle was greeted with relieved cheers by the crowd of 726.
