TIVERTON TOWN 1 DOVER ATHLETIC 0
DOVER were left pointless for the long trip home from Devon, after their efforts deserved at least a share.
Tiverton scored the only goal of a hard-fought game, that proved to be a frustrating one for the Kent contingent at Ladysmead.
Dover started brightly, and after a quarter of an hour Tommy Tyne's flick-on left Lee Spiller unmarked eight yards from goal, but his first-time shot went past the far post. A few minutes later Chris Holloway missed a good chance for the home side, as Tiverton began to see a lot of the ball.
The only goal of the game came in the 37th minute, when Paul Milsom scored with
a bullet header from Jamie Mudge's cross. On 44 minutes, Dover seemed to have equalised when Tyne ran onto Day's pass, and shot under Tiverton 'keeper Stuart Fraser. A very late flag ruled the "goal" offside, much to Dover's
astonishment.
Athletic played the ball around on the ground more after the break, and as a
result enjoyed much more of the game, and put the home side under increasing
pressure.
The closest Dover came to equalising was when Darren Davies headed Matt Carruthers's cross onto the bar; Craig Wilkins and Jamie Day both had shots saved by Fraser, but Tiverton's at times desperate defending won
the day for them, and Dover were left to rue their lack of finishing power.
Manager Richard Langley said afterwards, "It was a very frustrating game,as we did enough to get a result. We had an excellent second half, but didn't get the ball in the net, and were punished for it."
The attendance was 626, and Dover lined up: Paul Hyde, Matt Carruthers, Kenny Dyer, Dean Readings, Andy Arnott(Sub. Tony Browne, half-time), Danny Chapman, Jamie Day, Lee Spiller, Craig Wilkins, Tommy Tyne, Darren
Davies(Sub. Darren Davies, 75 min.). Subs. not used: James Rogers, Dale Skelton, Simon Postma.
