Skipper Jamie Grimes says Dover are not getting carried away despite claiming a third impressive scalp in their promising pre-season preparations.
Whites beat Millwall 2-0 on Tuesday night to maintain their perfect form ahead of Saturday’s final friendly at Chelmsford (3pm) and the new Vanarama National League season, which starts at Wrexham on August 6.
Grimes wore the armband and headed the second goal late on after an impressive performance in central defence and he said: “It was excellent. We’re feeling strong. It’s been a different pre-season (fitness coach Loui Fazakerley) has used all the science – we’ve not really done any hard running, we’ve just slowly got fitter. The lads are looking sharp.
“We’ve still got a bit of work to do against Chelmsford and next week in training and we feel confident we’ll finish pre-season feeling sharp and ready to do our best.”
He added: “We’re feeling strong but we’re not getting carried away. I’ve been in teams that have lost every game of pre-season then gone on to win the first five and also in teams that have done really well in pre-season and then gone on to have a really slow start.
“We’ll take nothing for granted. These are league teams, they are fighting but the way we play, we suffocate them. It’s all about Wrexham and turning up there and getting our season started well.”
Grimes, 25, said the pain of the play-off semi-final exit to Forest Green had motivated the squad and added: “It hurt the lads to go out in the play-offs.
“You can see that in the way people stayed in shape during the summer and in our performances. We look fit and sharp and hopefully we can have a good go again this year.”
