Chris Kinnear has warned against complacency as he bids to lead Dover into the FA Cup main draw for the third year running.
Whites, knocked out by Premier League Crystal Palace last season, face their former captain Craig Stone when they visit Eastbourne Borough in the final qualifying round on Saturday (3pm).
National League South Boro are managed by former Southampton midfielder Tommy Widdrington and took Dover to a replay last season.
Whites boss Kinnear, whose side are third in the National League, said: “Upsets happen in the FA Cup. We know that ourselves from beating Morecambe and Cheltenham last year.
“There will be bigger shocks than if Eastbourne beat us in the FA Cup. It’s up to us to make sure it doesn’t happen.
“We played them last year and were lucky to still be in the game. They ran us ragged for a while. They’re a decent side with a decent manager who knows what he’s doing. It won’t be easy there.”
Right-back Stone captained Dover to promotion and was a regular in the Conference until a foot injury saw him lose his place. He joined Eastbourne in the summer following his release by Whites.
Kinnear said: “He’ll want to do well against us and why wouldn’t he? He was our captain but we went on a great run and it was difficult for him to get back in the side.
“He knows what we’re about and I’m sure he’ll tell them but clubs do their homework anyway. We also have a lot of different players since he left who he won’t know
about.”
