Cambridge City 2 Dover Athletic 1

IT WAS another frustrating evening for Dover's travelling faithful on Tuesday night. Athletic looked like registering their first away win of the season until they conceded two goals near the end.

City's goalkeeper Martin Davies left the field on a stretcher after only a couple of minutes of this Dr Martens premier division clash following a collision with Lee Spiller.

Dover looked the better side for much of the first half. Craig Wilkins headed just wide and Andy Arnott headed just over from a corner, while Paul Hyde at the other end had quite an easy time of it.

Buster Smissen came on for a limping Mark Patterson after 25 minutes and then City's Leon Bell was shown the red card for a bad foul from behind on Dean Readings.

Dover began the second half well but lacked a cutting edge up front. Matt Carruthers switched to the right wing and immediately set up a chance for Wilkins which was saved, and moments later the same pairing combined for Dover's goal, with Wilkins heading in from six yards out.

That was after 64 minutes. Soon afterwards Simon Glover replaced Tony Browne. Dover seemed to become complacent as the game entered its final stages with a number of passes going astray. They paid the penalty when City's Jamie Goodbold equalised after a goalmouth scramble on 83 minutes.

Jamie Day then overstepped the mark with his protests after a shot appeared to hit a City hand and he was sent off.

Worse was to follow as City striker Danny Bloomfield broke free to score the winner with just three minutes left.

It was another game Dover should have won but, as against Eastbourne, they failed to hold on to a lead in the last ten minutes.
