TEACHER Pete Norton had an “absolutely amazing experience” coaching tag rugby in India.
The Astor College sports co-ordinator was one of 12 volunteers who went on a 10-day trip to Bhubaneswa state organised by the Tag Rugby Development Trust.
Mr Norton, who lives in Blenheim Road, Deal, said: “Teaching the children was fantastic, they were a sheer delight. They loved to shake your hand and ask your name. They gave us drawings as gifts and were just terrific.
“They also learned the game fast and by the end of the week were playing tag rugby with pace and skill.
“There were the occasional hiccups when the heavens opened and within minutes the pitches were completely waterlogged. But I learnt fast that in India you have to be very flexible and just go with the flow and always expected the unexpected. The children responded well to our efforts and loved playing.
“We coached the children for four days and then on the last day we held a tournament, the finals of which was watched by over 3,000 children.”
He added: “The charity that organised the tour, the Tag Rugby Development Trust, were incredible. The planning and organisation of the tour was highly professional and I applaud them for their efforts.
“There are four similar tours planned for next year to India, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia and I would urge anyone with a glimmer of interest to go on – it’s an experience of a lifetime!"
