First-team coach Mark Newson praised Dover's character after they came from behind to secure three points in the derby against a battling Welling side on Tuesday night.
On a wet and windy night Whites fell 1-0 down in just 63 seconds to a wondergoal from former Crabble frontman Michael Bakare, though they knuckled-down to level before the break through Stefan Payne (pictured) and won it through Sean Raggett's header early in the second half to return within three points of the play-off places.
Newson said: "They are always difficult games. Welling's game against (leaders) Cheltenham at the weekend was one we didn’t think they’d get points from (but they drew 1-1).
"At this time of year teams down at the bottom are scrapping."
Bakare's solo goal stunned his former side and Newson admitted: "It was a good finish. All our team talk goes out of the window after 60 seconds but fair play to the lads we responded well to that.
"We didn’t play as well as we’d have liked to but the conditions dictated that at times. We showed good character coming from behind, which we’ve done many times this year.
"They obviously got a lift from the goal which is understandable, but I don’t think they had many clear-cut chances, though they had a large amount of possession early on.
"Once we got our goal I thought we were never going to lose the game."
Newson also praised the quality delivery of skipper Nicky Deverdics whose set-pieces caused havoc all night and led to Raggett's thunderous winner.
Newson said: "Dev's delivery at set-plays is a major part of the side. We score so many goals from set-plays, balls in from corners and free-kicks. We are a threat, with Raggett, Richard Orlu, Jamie Grimes - when he’s playing - and Jack Parkinson as we saw (with Parkinson's winner at Woking) at the weekend."
