Dover Athletic captain Nicky Deverdics claim Whites feel hard done by after Forest Green Rovers play-off semi-final exit

Captain Nicky Deverdics says 'hard done by' Dover players were left asking themselves how they didn't make the Wembley play-off final.

Whites crashed-out in the National League play-off semi-finals 2-1 on aggregate to Forest Green Rovers after a 1-0 defeat at Crabble on Wednesday and a 1-1 draw in Gloucestershire on Saturday night.

The visitors spurned a glut of good chances to win the second leg but all they had to show for their superiority was Ricky Miller's deflected goal shortly after half-time, which was cancelled-out by Keanu Marsh-Brown's sublime curling effort less than six minutes later.

A distraught Deverdics said: "How we didn't get one in the first half I don't know. We pushed and pushed and we said at half-time, 'it's coming.' We were miles on top.

"It did come, finally, with a bit of luck, but we deserved that for the performance.

"Even after their goal we still had chances and Sam Magri has hit the bar, it's one of those games where you come away thinking 'how?'

On reflection the 28-year-old claimed: "The club has done unbelievably to get where it has and as much as we feel we should have made the final, it just wasn't to be.

"Everyone is obviously gutted but everyone knows we needed a better performance on Wednesday to give ourselves a better platform.

"We did as much as we could to get ourselves back in it but it was too little too late. We did more than enough and eight times out of 10 we'd have won that game, just not today."

He added: "Over the two legs we feel hard done by, but we got punished for the first leg - we were a bit flat, some really poor defending put ourselves in trouble, they punished us but didn't do a lot more after that.

"They went into the second leg with a lead but on the night we absolutely battered them. We've done more than enough to score two or three but didn't.

"They scored from the one real shot they had all game - Mitch (Walker) has not really done anything all game.

"You can't let him onto his right foot on the edge of the box, we all know what Marsh-Brown can do, to be fair if you're going to lose the tie you can't argue with it being to a goal like that."
