Dover suffered a fourth successive defeat in Vanarama Conference after title-chasing Torquay proved too strong on Saturday.
The hosts made it six wins on the spin at home so far this season but Whites dropped to 23rd spot in the process, making it just one win seven games.
While the final scoreline looks comfortable, Whites were still in the game until a 90th-minute own goal from former Gillingham defender Connor Essam wrapped up the points for Torquay.
Dover fielded new keeper Andrew Rafferty in goal with Mitch Walker sidelined through injury and started brightly with Ricky Miller denied a clear sight of goal inside the first minute.
Cheered on by 96 travelling fans, Whites almost went ahead when Tom Bonner headed Nicky Deverdics' free-kick just wide of the upright.
Torquay hit the post midway through the first half through Luke Young's effort from the edge of the area.
Pressure from the home side eventually paid off on 35 minutes when Young's corner was met by Aaron Downes at the near post to head beyond Rafferty.
It was nearly 2-0 before the break but Rafferty denied Angus MacDonald from close range before Torquay hit the woodwork as half-time approached.
Bonner's header was saved by keeper Martin Rice before Miller nearly claimed an equaliser for Whites.
Substitute Christian Nanetti provided a pace threat down the right and Dover nearly levelled 10 minutes from time as Miller beat keeper Rice but was unable to find the target.
Torquay finally settled their nerves late on when Courtney Cameron's cross was sliced into his own net by Essam.
