Former Gills defender Tom Wynter played in goal for Dover for over half of their FA Trophy win on Saturday.
Whites continued their stunning form with victory at Conference North Lowestoft, despite keeper Andy Rafferty being sent-off just before half-time.
Wynter came on for Nick Deverdics but couldn’t keep out the spot-kick as the teams went in level at half-time.
Dover had gone ahead on 26 minutes when Barry Cogan’s cross-shot was converted by Sterling after the keeper could only half-clear.
Both sides had gone close to scoring at that stage, Sean Francis’ header was cleared off the line while the hosts hit the woodwork via a fine Rafferty save.
After the break, Dover regained the lead when Tom Murphy produced a smart finish on 65 minutes.
Wynter’s goal was rarely threatened as Whites defended well with 10 men.
Murphy then turned provider in stoppage time, crossing for James Poole to turn in and make it 3-1.
