Before the General election on Thursday 4 July, STS Year 12 students were invited by the politics and international relations team at Canterbury Christchurch University to attend the Hustings at CCCU.
International Baccalaureate Coordinator at Sandwich Technology School Andy Stevens spoke of the importance of the students understanding the values of democracy.
“I often talk to my Criminology students about the importance of civil society and how people of good conscience can have different points of view whilst maintaining an atmosphere of mutual respect. I firmly believe that they got to see this in action last night.”
The students were keen to get involved and Dr Susan Kenyon of CCCU spoke very highly of them.
“Your students showcased this themselves. They are a real credit to you. We were impressed by their ability to work together with other schools and each other in the workshop and to listen to two hours of political debate.
“They showed respect for different perspectives and understanding of the need to listen to others, even if you don't agree with them. We were also impressed by their engagement and enthusiasm.
“It isn't easy to be confident in a new place, with new people, asking you to perform a new task in very little time! But they threw themselves into the task and communicated their needs so well. They were able to quickly identify something that affects them/their community, that they want to change, which shows critical thinking and awareness of their world.”
STS are very proud of the students that attended the hustings and as a result of the positive relationships they have with local universities, opportunities like this are commonplace for STS’s sixth form students.
Their students benefit from a variety of extra-curricular activities that enrich their studies. The school also has a dedicated careers advisor who arranges a number of events throughout the year, helping students to pursue their aspirations feeling well prepared and confident.
If you’re interested in joining STS Sixth Form, then come along to the enrolment event on GCSE results day - Thursday 22 August from 9:30am to 12pm. There will be friendly staff on hand to run through all the options available to you and enrol you on the day!
