Crowds gathered tonight for a rare sighting of the Northern Lights above Kent.

The Harty Ferry was one of the most popular viewing spots, with spectators gathering just after 10pm.

It came after the Met Office predicted another night of spectacular aurora views' after two successive evenings when the lights were visible in the West Country.

Displays of the Northern Lights occur when solar particles enter the Earth’s atmosphere and emit burning gases that produce different coloured lights.

The scientific term for the lights is the aurora borealis.
