A binman has been airlifted to hospital after a refuse truck toppled onto its side in a quiet country lane.

The vehicle careered into a field off Scoggers Hill near Oversland outside Faversham just before midday.

Three men were in the truck at the time and one has been airlifted to hospital in London, but the extent of his injuries is not yet known.

Another suffered a fractured arm while the third man escaped injury.

No other vehicles were involved, but a passing HGV driver did stop at the scene to help the injured binmen.

The road remains closed and a recovery operation to remove the vehicles is underway.

The lorry is owned by the Biffa firm, which provides refuse services to Swale Borough Council.

A Biffa spokesman said: "We are looking at how it left the road.

"It is a narrow country lane and we need to look at all the possibilities."

Swale Borough Council spokesman Phil Sutcliffe said: "A lorry used by our waste contractors was involved in an accident before midday today.

"We are working with our contractors to establish the full details of what happened, but we wish the two operatives taken to hospital a speedy recovery."
