A Faversham fisherman says he had a premonition of this morning's earthquake.

As thousands across Kent were woken by tremors just before 3am, most people were shocked to find out it was an earthquake measuring magnitude 4.2 ...but Mark Hamilton wasn't surprised at all.

As he carried out his usual daily fishing duties yesterday morning in the Swale, he says that everything "wasn't quite right".

He said: "We usually catch a whole net filled with crabs, but there were none. This is usually a sign there is going to be a storm but I sensed it would be something a bit different. I sensed something was going to happen.

"It was silent instead of the usual birds singing their dawn's chorus and we caught less fish. We got back around 8pm last night and by 3am today, the ground's moving.

"It was all very strange, but we just knew something was going to happen."

The British Geological Survey confirmed the epicentre was near Ramsgate but tremors were felt across Faversham, with some describing it as like an "explosion".

Police say no injuries have been reported, but they are "monitoring the situation".

A spokesman said: "It is understood parts of east Kent have been affected by an earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale.

"Kent Police and Kent Fire and Rescue Services have at this time received no reports of any structural damage or injuries.

"We will continue to liaise with our partner agencies to ensure we are providing help and support in any areas needed."
