A young couple due to get married in May say they are agonising over whether to cancel their big day and risk losing thousands of pounds worth of deposits.

Holly Davis and Jack Witt, who live in Walderslade, are supposed to get hitched on Saturday, May 16 - but the coronavirus pandemic has thrown their plans in jeopardy.

In his speech last night, Prime Minister Boris Johnson put the country into lockdown and said to ensure compliance with the government's instructions to stay at home, all social events - including weddings - are now banned. This is set to be reviewed in three weeks' time.

But with the 23-year-olds, who got engaged back in January 2018, due to get married in Surrey in seven weeks, it is unclear whether they will be forced to ditch the date.

Holly says the pair are fretting over what to do.

"We have already had guests say they're not coming - both family and friends," the former Faversham schoolgirl said.

"We don't know whether to pursue with the date, and risk having the plug pulled at the last minute. But of course we don't want to put any of our guests at risk.

"If we cancel now, however, the venue say we can't get a refund - and this may even be the case if the government bans weddings in the coming weeks.

"Postponing is an option - but we don't know when this situation with coronavirus will be over.

"It is really difficult to know what to do. We have planned this for more than two years - it's heartbreaking."
