A man has appeared in court charged with murdering a pensioner in a quiet street in Faversham.

Police charged Anthony Goodwin, 62, after the body of an elderly man was found at a home in a quiet cul-de-sac.

Officers were called to Crispin Close at 4.50pm on Friday after the report the pensioner had died there.

Yesterday police said they had charged Goodwin, of Crispin Close, with the murder of the 75-year-old man, who was a neighbour and has been named as Henry Messenger.

A cordon was set up around two bungalows in the street, while forensics officers carried out a search.

Police say the victim has been formally identified and his next of kin has been informed. The victim and the suspect are believed to be known to each other.

Goodwin appeared via video link before Medway Magistrates’ Court this morning.

He spoke only to confirm his name and address date of birth and was remanded in custody. His case was sent to Maidstone Crown Court to be dealt with.

He is due to appear there on Wednesday.
