Traffic is queuing for more than five miles on the M2 following a multi-vehicle crash and fuel spill.

Motorists were being held coastbound following the collision between Junction 5 for Sittingbourne and Brenley Corner in Faversham.

The incident happened shortly before 1pm but all lanes have since reopened.

National Highways tweeted shortly after 1pm: "All lanes are now open on the M2 eastbound between J5 and J6 near Sittingbourne, following an earlier collision and fuel spill.

"Delays of 30 minutes remain on the approach, with 5.5 miles of congestion."

Traffic has since returned to normal levels following the incident.

Police intercepting EU-bound lorries at Brenley Corner had been causing severe delays at the roundabout over the past few weeks.

But the controls were lifted yesterday in a bid to reduce traffic for locals and tourists visiting Kent over Easter.

Officers have been using the Faversham junction as a stopping point to prevent HGV drivers from travelling along the A2 to reach the port and Channel Tunnel.

When the enforcement controls are on, rogue hauliers trying to avoid Operation Brock on the M20 were being diverted to go back and join Junction 8 of the M20 at Maidstone.

Much to the dismay of motorists, the notorious Brenley Corner roundabout - where the A2, M2 and A299 converge - will remain reduced to one lane for the rest of April as part of a plan to reduce hold-ups at Dover.
