Dramatic pictures have emerged showing a car that burst into flames after it was hit by a train at a level crossing.

A 20-year-old-man was arrested after last night's incident, and 20 people had to be led to safety.

Firefighters were called to Buckland, between Teynham and Faversham, just before midnight to put out a blaze that started in the car.

Paramedics were also sent to the scene but there were no reports of any casualties.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "The car was found to have been abandoned earlier.
"Following BTP enquiries, a 20-year-old man was arrested in the early hours for dangerous driving, driving with no insurance, and endangering safety."

A replacement bus service was put in place overnight while an inspection of the track was carried out.

Train operator Southeastern say services through Teynham were delayed by around 10 minutes this morning because of damage to the signalling and level crossing.

They have also urged passengers who were delayed by more than 30 minutes to apply for compensation.
