Police have been trying to track down a man trespassing on the railway this afternoon.

Officers were called to Faversham station today after the man was spotted running across the tracks.

The man was spotted by a train driver who alerted station staff.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police (BTP) said: "We were called at 12.09pm to tracks near Faversham station, after a train driver spotted someone on the line.

"Staff at the station spoke to a man, but he then ran off."

The incident has prompted BTP to remind passengers not to trespass on the railway.

The BTP's Kent team tweeted this evening: "Please remember tracks are for trains not people."

Between July 2006 and July 2016 just under half of those killed while trespassing were under 25-year-olds.

BTP says almost 170 young people died during that period.

Trespassing on railways is a criminal offence carrying a fine of up to £1,000. It can also lead to other offences such as endangering trains and other rail users and can carry up to a life imprisonment.
